Climate Change Levy

Introduced in 2001 as a way of encouraging energy efficiency, the Climate Change Levy (CCL) is a government tax on the use of energy by business.

The CCL affects most UK businesses and is applied at different rates, depending on the energy source:
  • Electricity 0.441p/kWh
  • Gas, coal, lignite and coke 0.154p/kWh
  • Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) 0.985p/kg
The levy is intended to be fiscally neutral with all the revenues collected recycled to businesses.

How does CCL affect my business?

This will depend on your level of energy consumption and number of employees.

Businesses with a relatively large number of employees, but which are low in energy consumption are likely to be better off than businesses with high energy consumption and low staff levels.

The only way to avoid the Climate Change Levy altogether is to switch to Green Source.
