Home EV charger installation: what to expect

Installing a home EV charger might feel like a big step but our expert installation service aims to make it as quick, easy and safe as possible. And before they leave, your engineer will take the time to show you how to use your charger and schedule your charging times. Online survey

After you've purchased your home EV charger, you'll be sent a link by text to your mobile phone asking you to complete an online survey. Completing the online survey will involve you providing us with photographs of your existing electrical system, such as your fuse box, electricity meter, earth bondings, your preferred charger location and the distance from your meter to the desired charger location. You'll typically receive this link within one to three days of purchasing your charger.

Our installation partner will review the information you provide from the survey and get in touch with next steps. If additional works are identified, the installer will contact you to discuss and provide a quote before proceeding.

On rare occasions we may need to carry out an onsite survey. There will be an additional charge if this is necessary. Any questions relating to this can be answered by our installer.

Load checks

Our installation partner will also be required to carry out a load check of your property to see if your existing electricity supply is adequate to accommodate the new charger. They'll use the information you provided as part of the online survey to do this.

Our installer will submit the load check application to your local DNO (Distribution Network Operator). The DNO will carry out their load check and provide the approval to install the charger. The timescale for this can vary depending on the DNO. Unfortunately, our installer cannot proceed with the installation until a satisfactory load check has been completed by the DNO.

If the DNO identify that they must perform upgrade works to allow your installation to proceed they will notify you directly of the requirements, discuss potential solutions and any associated costs in more detail before proceeding with these works. If you decide not to proceed with the installation of your EV charger at this point, you will have the right to cancel your charger purchase and we'll provide you with a full refund.

Examples of DNO upgrade works could include unlooping a looped service or main fuse upgrades. Find out who your local DNO is on the Energy Networks website.

Typical installation times can be anywhere from four to eight weeks depending on whether you are a standard install or require additional installation or DNO upgrade works.

On the day of your installation a standard install will take around 2-4 hours.

On the day of installation our approved installation partner will:

carry out the installation of your home EV charger as well as any previously agreed non-standard additional works*
turn off your electricity for a short time while installing your EV charger to connect it to the main supply
show you how to use the EV charger and associated mobile app.

To allow the installation to go smoothly, please ensure the following on the day:

The area around the distribution board/electricity supply meter is clear, including the cable run route
You or a nominated responsible adult are available to allow property access, advise of the desired location of the charger and any cabling, and confirm the installation has been completed as expected
A smartphone is available to allow the mobile app to be downloaded and demonstrated
Your electric vehicle is available to carry out a test charge.^

*On the rare occasion where further additional work is identified on site that has not been recognised during the review of the online survey, our installation partner will advise you of this and together agree on how to proceed before your charger installation is completed.

^If the electric vehicle is not present our approved installer will use a test kit to ensure that the charger is fully functional. They will not be responsible for a second visit to check compatibility with your car. If a second visit is required, this may be chargeable.

A home EV charger from ScottishPower includes standard installation by our installation partner. The following is included in the standard installation:

An online survey to understand your installation requirements
The Installation of an EV Charging Point to a brick or plaster wall, or to another suitable permanent structure as per Device Manufacturer's recommendations
The installation of a dynamic load management / load management device and any associated CT clamp(s),

Up to 15 metres of cable, run and neatly clipped to the wall between the distribution board / electricity supply meter and the home EV charger
Supply and Installation of a compliant MCB/RCD unit
Supply and Installation of a compliant Surge Protection Device
Cable can be drilled through one hole in a wall up to 500mm thick (if required)
Up to 3 meters of plastic conduit to conceal interior wiring
All necessary safety tests to ensure your home EV charger is ready for use
Set up of the connection between your charge point and your mobile device

Please note we also make the following assumptions:

The existing switchboard has available space
The service fuse is 80 amps or greater
There are no additional groundworks required
There is an isolation switch between your meter and your consumer unit.*

*A standard installation relies on there being a meter isolation switch installed as part of your electrical system. If you don't have a meter isolation switch it's your responsibility to arrange this via your energy supplier prior to the installation appointment being confirmed.

If after reviewing your online survey our installer identifies additional works* are required that are not included as part of our standard installation offer, or identifies the installation is to be performed in a property that is located in a rural area or on an island, or identifies that you want the installed EV charger connecting to Solar panels then we would deem this as a non-standard installation.

Where a non-standard installation is identified our installation partner will contact you to discuss the additional works required and where possible provide a quote for them to complete the works for you. **Where the installer cannot complete the works identified they will provide you with sufficient information in order for you to get the works completed yourself before the installation can go ahead.

*Examples of additional works are equipotential gas / water / oil pipe bonding, EV Charger supply cable runs that are greater that 15m from the incoming electricity supply point to the EV Charger installation point, cable runs that go underfloor boards and **external ground works.

If you decide not to go ahead with your installation due to additional works being identified we will refund the purchase price of the EV Charger and standard installation.

Equipotential bonding is a required safety measure used in electrical installations as stipulated in IET Wiring Regulations. If your property has Gas, Water or Oil heating that is supplied by metal pipes then they will need equipotential bonding. This means there should be an earthing cable of suitable size installed between the identified incoming service supply pipe and the properties main earth connector creating an electrical connection between different metallic parts of a building to ensure they all have the same electrical potential and resistance.

If you require bonding installing or upgrading our installer will provide you with a quote and if agreed, they will complete that work for you on the day of your EV charger installation.

Energy Saving Trust (EST) Domestic Chargepoint Funding – For rural households in Scotland & EV purchasers through the used EV loan in Scotland

If you live in Scotland, and subject to EST funding availability, you could qualify for a grant of up to £400 from the Energy Saving Trust (EST). To be eligible for the grant you must:

Claim the EST Grant prior to installation
Share the approval reference for the EST Grant with our approved installation partner before an installation appointment can be given.
Rural and remote electric vehicle owner – you live in a small town, rural and remote area or Island of Scotland and own or lease an electric vehicle (including through work), or
Used electric vehicle owner – you live in Scotland and bought your electric vehicle through the used electric vehicle loan

The grant is then paid by the EST to you by cheque on completion of your charge point installation. For further information on this grant, and its availability, please visit the Energy Saving Trust website here.

Prevent Electric Shock: If an electrical fault occurs within the property and you touched a metal part (water tap for example) that had low resistance you could get a severe or in some cases fatal electric shock. Equipotential bonding prevents this by ensuring all metal parts have the same electrical potential.
Prevent Fire Hazards: Electrical faults can also cause sparks or high heat, which could ignite flammable materials (like gas or oil). By quickly and safely carrying away any stray electricity, equipotential bonding reduces this risk.
Improve Electrical System Performance: By providing a good path for electricity to follow, equipotential bonding can also help your electrical system work more efficiently and effectively.

The total credit amount of £60 (inc VAT) is based on a calculation of the equivalent cost of charging 833.33kWh at the average off peak rate of our EV Saver tariff (7.2p) which equates to 2,500 miles based on an assumed average electricity usage per mile of 3kWh. If using another ScottishPower tariff, the credit amount will remain at £60, which will equate to a different number of miles. The £60 will be credited to your electricity account within 30 days of your charger install. This is a limited time offer and may be withdrawn at any time. Terms and conditions apply.

This is dependant on your car and battery size.

Connection to Solar panels is not included as part of a standard installation. Our installer will be able to provide a quote for any additional equipment required and connection upon request after your online survey has been completed.

To be eligible for the EV Saver tariff you must be a ScottishPower electricity customer, have a single rate smart meter that sends half-hourly readings and pay by monthly Direct Debit. If you are not currently a ScottishPower customer, you can join us on our Standard Variable tariff and then switch to the EV Saver tariff through your online account. The off peak timings are based on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). However, during British Summer Time (BST), the time periods will change to reflect the new time zone. BST runs from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.

All electricity used will be charged at your normal unit rate based on your ScottishPower tariff. The credit for your EV smart charging session will appear as credit on your bill. The greenest times of day will be when the carbon intensity of the electricity required to charge your EV is at its lowest. This will vary each day depending on a number of factors, including weather conditions, renewable energy generation and demand on the grid.
