Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) work in a similar way to a fridge, only in reverse. Powered by electricity, they extract naturally occurring heat from the air - even when temperatures are below 0°C - and amplify it. The resulting energy is then used to heat your premises.
Air-to-water and air-to-air are the two main types of ASHPs:
Ground source heat pumps take naturally occurring heat from the ground at around 8 to 14°C. This is then passed through an electric heat pump compressor to create high grade heat (45 to 55°C) which is used for heating and hot water.
Ground source heat pumps are very efficient and transfer around four times more energy than is used to extract it from the ground.
