The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) encourages people and businesses who generate surplus renewable energy to get paid for electricity they export back to the National Grid.

We now have two SEG tariffs which pay our customers for each unit of electricity they generate and export back to the grid. These tariffs are variable - meaning the price you are paid per unit you export back to the National Grid can go up or down. Please note, the export price is not linked to any Ofgem price cap or FIT tariff rates.

Price Per kWh = 12p[1]

Customers who meet the eligibility criteria (detailed below) for SEG will be able to take advantage of this product.

Price Per kWh = 15p[1]

Customers who meet the eligibility criteria (detailed below) for SEG and installed their solar panels and/or battery through ScottishPower will be able to take advantage of this product

What do I need to have to get SEG?

You get paid a fixed rate for any excess renewable electricity you export to the grid from sources such as:

Solar PV
A wind turbine
A hydro system
An anaerobic digestion system
A micro combined heat and power system (micro-CHP)

What is the eligibility for SEG?

Be the owner of the generation unit, e.g. the solar panels
Your system cannot exceed the 5MW capacity limit (or 50kW for Micro-CHP systems)
Have an export, smart, automatic meter reading (AMR) or other half hourly read capable meter which can record exported energy every half-hour
Have a Microgeneration Certificate Scheme (MCS), Flexi-Orb or similar certified installation and be able to provide the certificate
Have a confirmed Distribution Network Operator (DNO) export grid connection (usually a letter or email) - this is preferred but not mandatory.
You must opt-out of any existing FIT Export agreement, if you have one

How to apply for SEG

Simply apply now and complete our online application, including uploading the following documents. Due to the various checks we need to undertake, the processing of your application can up to 8-12 weeks, but don't worry - we'll work from the meter readings you provide as part of your application so you'll not miss out on any payments.

How long does the application take?

Application process (up to 14 days)

Firstly, your application will go through a validation process to ensure eligibility and adherence to the minimal criteria. Additionally, we will verify that you have a Smart meter capable of recording Half Hourly meter readings.

DNO creates your MPAN (1-10 weeks)

The DNO creates your export MPAN - this is the longest part of the application process and is out of our control as this depends on the resource available there (a bit like applying for a passport).

Register payment details

Following this we will request you register your payment details. New applications will be paid from their application date, where as customers switching to us will be paid from the date agreed with the old supplier.

Meter readings and ongoing billing

Regarding meter readings and ongoing billing, please note that the meter reading you provided upon application will be used to start your account. Rest assured, you will not lose out on any energy exported to us during the above process. If you are transitioning from another supplier, we may need to request additional readings from you. The reading we request will be used to start your account, while your previous supplier will end your account based on their readings.

We will make every effort to obtain ongoing meter readings from your smart meter. However, if we are unable to do so directly, we may request a reading from you in order to issue an accurate invoice and payment.

Frequently asked questions

To be eligible for SEG:

You must have one of the generation sources mentioned previously
You must have a Smart or AMR meter that can obtain half hourly readings and you consent to us taking them
You must have an Export MPAN or we will create one for you if this is you first applying and are not transferring from another supplier
You must complete our online application, uploading the correct, required, documentation i.e. MCS Certificate, completed Vendor/Bank form with the necessary supporting document

Once we receive your application form and supporting documentation, we will begin the registration process which may include creating an Export MPAN
We will also need to check some external systems to ensure that you are not being paid for FIT Export. As previously mentioned, you cannot be paid for FIT & SEG Export
You will be paid every 90 days and the first payment will be made approximately 90 days after your contract start date with us
IMPORTANT: You must submit the readings from your export meter, online, every 6 months or we will be unable to make any payments to you. We may also ask that you provide photo evidence to support your submissions

There will be no change to your electricity supply.
Your SEG contract will be separate to your normal electricity and/or gas contracts
You will still receive your normal bills for your electricity supply
You will use some of what you generate and the excess will be exported to the grid
Your electricity does not need to be supplied by ScottishPower for you to be eligible to receive SEG payments from ScottishPower
If you are a ScottishPower customer, you can transfer your energy supply (based on your current T&Cs) but still receive SEG payments from ScottishPower

You’ll need to provide us with meter readings from your export meter every 6 months, for payments to be issued. In some instances, we might require photo evidence that clearly shows the meter serial number and the meter reading on your export register. Below you can find instructions on how to read the export register of the types of smart meter that ScottishPower installs. However, if ScottishPower did not install your smart meter, you may need to seek advice from the installing supplier on how to read the meter.

SMETS 1 Elster

From the meter index, press the middle button to enter the meter menu
Using the top and bottom buttons to cycle through the menu options, navigate to “General” and press the middle button to enter the “General” menu
Using the top and bottom buttons to cycle through the menu options, navigate to “Total Registers” and press the middle button
Using the top and bottom buttons to cycle through the headings, navigate to “Cum. Exp.” which will have the value of the active export measured in kWh

Aclara

From the meter index, press the B button to cycle through various headings until the “Mode of Operation” is displayed which will identify if the meter is in “Credit Mode” or “Prepay Mode”
Once on the “Mode of Operation”, continue to press the A button until reaching the “Total Export kWh” heading which will display the value of the active export register measured in kWh

SMETS 2 Honeywell

From the meter index, press the top button to be taken into the main menu options
On the main menu, cycle through the options using the bottom button to “Registers” and press the top button to enter the “Registers” menu
In the “Registers” menu, cycle through the options using the bottom button until “Cumulative” is highlighted and press the top button to enter the “Cumulative” options
In the “Cumulative” options, press the bottom button to cycle through the headings until “Cum. Exp.” is displayed which will display the active export register in kWh

Aclara

From the default display menu, press the A button continuously until the heading “Total Active Export kWh” is displayed which will show the active export register in kWh
Pressing the B button will take the user out of the default menu into other meter features. In this case the user should wait 60 seconds for the display to return to the default menu and then repeat step 1

EDMI

From the meter index, press the “OK” button to cycle forward or the return button to cycle back until the “EXPRT” heading appears which will show the active export register in kWh
An alternative method is to wait until the “EXPRT” heading is displayed as it will automatically cycle between “IMPRT”, “EXPRT” and “BILL” every few seconds

Customers may have meters from other manufacturers if the smart meter / AMR had been installed by an energy supplier other than ScottishPower.

If you take your Microgeneration system with you, you will lose the right to SEG payments for that installation. If the installation remains at the property the new owner/occupier will be able to transfer the SEG payments into their name. The transfer of the SEG Installation will need to be agreed as part of the sale of your home.

If you purchase a property which already has Microgeneration technology installed and has been registered for SEG by the previous owner, you will need to agree as part of the sale that you will take over the SEG contract. You should also obtain details of the SEG provider and the SEG ID. If the associated SEG provider is ScottishPower, we require that you complete the 'Change of ownership form' and provide this along with proof of ownership of the property.

Please download the below form and email this with your supporting documentation to SEG@scottishpower.com. The forms must be populated in full and the requested supporting evidence provided, or we will be unable to make any changes.

Please do this as soon as possible as we cannot accept responsibility for payments made to the previous occupier after your move in date if you have not provided the appropriate documentation before a reading was entered.

To avoid payment being issued to the previous party incorrectly, please do not enter a meter reading until you receive email confirmation that this has been updated on our system and your account is live. If a reading is entered before the process is completed, we cannot accept responsibility for payments made to the previous occupier

The forms must be populated in full and the requested supporting evidence provided, or we will be unable to make any changes

Please do this as soon as possible as we cannot accept responsibility for payments made to the previous occupier after you became responsible, if you have not provided the appropriate documentation before a reading was entered.

To avoid payment being issued to the previous party incorrectly, please do not enter a meter reading until you have received email confirmation that this has been updated on our system and your account is live. If a reading is entered before the process is completed, we cannot accept responsibility for payments made to the party.

A cooling-off period automatically applies. You have 14 calendar days from the date you apply for SEG Plan to tell us that you want to cancel it. This is your ‘cooling-off’ period. This cooling-off period will expire after 14 calendar days.
