The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a new scheme which encourages people who generate surplus renewable energy to get paid for electricity they export back to the National Grid. Effective from 1 January 2020, a SEG tariff will provide eligible small scale, low-carbon generators with payments for the electricity they export to the National Grid.
For example, homes with solar panels often make more energy than they need. Instead of wasting this extra energy, it gets sent back to the grid. With the new SEG scheme, people who make more energy than they use will receive payments.
To get SEG, you need to have a renewable energy source such as solar panels, a wind turbine, a hydro system, an anaerobic digestion system, or a micro combined heat and power system. You’ll get paid a fixed rate for any extra electricity you send back to the grid.
SEG acts as an alternative to the Feed-in Tariff, which ended in March 2019, and helps the UK move towards a more sustainable future.
