Electric Vehicle (EV) Home Charger Support
We don’t recommend installing your EV charger yourself. If you purchase an EV charger from ScottishPower the installation by an experienced professional is included in the cost.
You can charge your car through a regular socket, however this method of charging is not the most time efficient as it can take anywhere between 24 hours or longer to fully charge a battery from 5% (depending on battery size and minimum charge capability)*.
* 3-pin plug EV chargers use a standard domestic socket to charge your electric car at a maximum of 2.3kW which will charge a 40kWh battery from 5% to full in approximately 18 hours and 54kWh battery in 24 hours.During your installer survey we ask you several questions to identify how many high electrical load appliances you currently have within your property. From this information the installer can calculate your property's current ampage.
A 7kWh charger will add 32 amps to your property’s electrical load when being used at full capacity, so if you have a main fuse that is rated at 60 or 80 amps it is likely the DNO will want to change this to a 100-amp fuse.
When you get a charger installed by ScottishPower we will install a dynamic load balancing or load management device as part of our standard installation package. A dynamic load balancer allows the charger to monitor any changes in your energy use in near real time, and then helps ensure the EV Charger distributes the power more evenly so it never exceeds the main fuse rating. A load management device will cut power to the charger if the power being used exceeds the main fuse rating. These devices help ensure your homes electricity supply is fully protected from being overloaded by an EV Charger.

EV chargers require either 4G connectivity or Wi-Fi to connect to the charger and start a charging session and to ensure they can provide smart features or update with the latest software.
