Electricity meters have a lifespan, which can vary from around 10 years+, this is known as the certification date. This is like a ‘best before date’ for your meter, ensuring it remains accurate and reliable.
The Office for Product Safety and Standards sets this date to try and make sure your meter is always recording your energy use accurately and that your energy readings are correct, if we have contacted you recently saying you need a new meter you should book an appointment for a replacement.
If you rent but your energy bill is in your name, you can get a new meter installed. However, it’s a good idea to get your landlord’s permission first. Smart Energy GB offers templates to help you communicate with your landlord.
It’s important to note that traditional meters have not been manufactured for several years. As a result, any new meter installed will be a smart meter. Rest assured, if you’re transitioning to a smart meter, it should be an easy switch which should enhance your energy management experience. The installation takes about an hour per meter, and the installer will show you how to get the best out of your new meter.
If your meter's certification has expired there is no need to worry, it's not a safety issue, it just means your meter might not be precise. This means your energy bills might not be accurate and you may be charged more.
