Our home EV charger installation partner will fit the charging point to a brick or plaster wall, or to another suitable permanent structure. Remember that to install an electric car charger at your home, you’ll need dedicated off-street parking, and the charging cable can’t cross any public footpaths or access ways. If you’re unsure, we can offer advice about the best place to install your home EV charger.

The total time from your home EV charger purchase to installing the electric car charger can take approximately two to four weeks. On the day of EV charger installation at your home, standard service will take around two to four hours.

Online survey

After you've purchased your home EV charger, you'll be sent a link by text to your mobile phone asking you to complete an online survey. Completing the online survey will involve you providing us with photographs of your existing electrical system, such as your fuse box, electricity meter, earth bondings, your preferred charger location and the distance from your meter to the desired charger location. You’ll typically receive this link within one to three days of purchasing your charger.

Our installation partner will review the information you provide from the survey and get in touch with next steps. If additional works are identified, the installer will contact you to discuss and provide a quote before proceeding.

On rare occasions we may need to carry out an onsite survey. There will be an additional charge if this is necessary. Any questions relating to this can be answered by our installer.

Load checks

Our installation partner will also be required to carry out a load check of your property to see if your existing electricity supply is adequate to accommodate the new charger. They'll use the information you provided as part of the online survey to do this.

Our installer will submit the load check application to your local DNO (Distribution Network Operator). The DNO will carry out their load check and provide the approval to install the charger. The timescale for this can vary depending on the DNO. Unfortunately, our installer cannot proceed with the installation until a satisfactory load check has been completed by the DNO.

If the DNO identify that they must perform upgrade works to allow your installation to proceed they will notify you directly of the requirements, discuss potential solutions and any associated costs in more detail before proceeding with these works. If you decide not to proceed with the installation of your EV charger at this point, you will have the right to cancel your charger purchase and we'll provide you with a full refund.

Examples of DNO upgrade works could include unlooping a looped service or main fuse upgrades. Find out who your local DNO is on the Energy Networks website.

Typical installation times can be anywhere from four to eight weeks depending on whether you are a standard install or require additional installation or DNO upgrade works.

*On the rare occasion where further additional work is identified on site that has not been recognised during the review of the online survey, our installation partner will advise you of this and together agree on how to proceed before your charger installation is completed.

^If the electric vehicle is not present our approved installer will use a test kit to ensure that the charger is fully functional. They will not be responsible for a second visit to check compatibility with your car. If a second visit is required, this may be chargeable.

*A standard installation relies on there being a meter isolation switch installed as part of your electrical system. If you don't have a meter isolation switch it's your responsibility to arrange this via your energy supplier prior to the installation appointment being confirmed.

If after reviewing your online survey our installer identifies additional works* are required that are not included as part of our standard installation offer, or identifies the installation is to be performed in a property that is located in a rural area or on an island, or identifies that you want the installed EV charger connecting to Solar panels then we would deem this as a non-standard installation.

Where a non-standard installation is identified our installation partner will contact you to discuss the additional works required and where possible provide a quote for them to complete the works for you.  **Where the installer cannot complete the works identified they will provide you with sufficient information in order for you to get the works completed yourself before the installation can go ahead.

*Examples of additional works are equipotential gas / water / oil pipe bonding, EV Charger supply cable runs that are greater that 15m from the incoming electricity supply point to the EV Charger installation point, cable runs that go underfloor boards and **external ground works.

If you decide not to go ahead with your installation due to additional works being identified we will refund the purchase price of the EV Charger and standard installation.

Equipotential bonding is a required safety measure used in electrical installations as stipulated in IET Wiring Regulations.  If your property has Gas, Water or Oil heating that is supplied by metal pipes then they will need equipotential bonding. This means there should be an earthing cable of suitable size installed between the identified incoming service supply pipe and the properties main earth connector creating an electrical connection between different metallic parts of a building to ensure they all have the same electrical potential and resistance.

If you require bonding installing or upgrading our installer will provide you with a quote and if agreed, they will complete that work for you on the day of your EV charger installation.

Our installers do not complete groundworks.

If you require your EV Charger installing on a separate building to the main property (such as a garage) or want your cabling hiding under ground opposed to being clipped to a wall, then you will be required to arrange for a trench to be dug and conduit provided so the installer can lay the required power supply cable to the charging unit location.

Typical requirements for groundwork trenching are as follows;

The trench must be at least 400mm deep and 200mm wide (this may alter subject to requirements) and this is the same whether the requirement is to trench through a hard or a soft surface such as concrete, tarmac, grass, soil etc.

If you do not wish to have to complete groundworks, then you may wish to consider an alternative EV charge point location on a different exterior wall of your property or select one of our chargers that has a longer charging lead to reach your vehicle.

Energy Saving Trust (EST) Domestic Chargepoint Funding – For rural households in Scotland & EV purchasers through the used EV loan in Scotland.
